Your credit reporting rights in Canada

Understand your credit-report rights, what to check and where to ask for a correction. Provincial and territorial rules matter.

Your right to question an error

You can dispute information you believe is wrong. Compare your Equifax and TransUnion reports. Check unfamiliar accounts, incorrect balances or payment history, and entries that may be too old.

How long can information stay?

There is no single reporting period for every entry across Canada. The type of entry, province or territory, and bureau can affect the period. Check the event and date used to start the period before calling an entry overdue for removal.

Ask for a correction

Identify the entry, explain the error and send copies of supporting records to the bureau. Contact the lender or other organization that supplied the information too. Keep the report, your request, proof of delivery and the reply.

Response periods and complaints

Do not assume a United States 30-day dispute deadline applies in Canada. Check the applicable local rules. If the bureau does not resolve the issue, use its complaint process and contact the appropriate provincial or territorial consumer office. The right complaint body depends on the issue and organization.

Use these rights with your own evidence

Save the report page, account details, relevant dates, supporting records and correspondence. A possible error needs evidence; this guide does not decide whether a particular entry breaks the law.
